St. Bernard’s School is a K-9 independent boys’ school founded in 1904.  The school, located on the Upper East Side, serves a diverse community of approximately 380 students and 100 employees.

We are seeking a full-time Latin teacher to begin July 1, 2025, to teach Latin in our middle and upper divisions. The study of Latin is a cherished tradition of the school; it is required of all boys in grades VI-VIII, with some boys opting to continue with Latin in Grade IX. This teacher will report to the Middle and Upper School division heads. Students read, write, translate, and speak Latin as much as possible, and we teach grammar explicitly with the aim of supporting reading and translating. The textbook is Jenney’s First Year Latin (1987).  

Responsibilities: 

  • Teach Latin courses in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades (and ninth grade when needed), using a grammar-based approach 
  • Establish and cultivate a classroom community that promotes student confidence, belonging, and community responsibility
  • Uphold professional obligations, including, but not limited to, assigned duties, meetings, parent conferences, and school events
  • Maintain records of student work and development
  • Prepare materials and classroom for class activities
  • Engage and support students of varied identities, lifestyles, and beliefs
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs and interests
  • Attend professional development, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to maintain and improve professional excellence
  • Communicate respectfully, effectively, and consistently with students’ parents/guardians as needed
  • Use computers, audiovisual, and other equipment, as appropriate, to enhance learning
  • Ability and willingness to cover classes and other supervisory periods when needed. 
  • Participate in the life of the school community through activities such as supervising a student lunch table, attending school assemblies, etc. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of School


Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Latin and/or classics is preferred; an advanced degree is appealing.
  • Demonstrated excellence in and knowledge of the Latin language and ancient Roman history and culture 
  • Ability and willingness to teach English and writing or history. Knowledge of ancient Greek is a plus. 
  • A deep understanding of curriculum, standards, and expectations for Middle and Upper School students (i.e., grades VI-IX)
  • An understanding of learning differences and demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction in the classroom based on those needs
  • Strong yet relational classroom management and clear expectations for student behavior
  • Eagerness to contribute to a positive faculty culture by building collaborative and respectful relationships with colleagues and by supporting fellow teachers and administrators
  • Commitment to maintaining professional standards of appearance, courtesy, responsiveness, discretion, punctuality, and attendance
  • Strong interpersonal skills that foster collaboration  and effective, respectful communication with students, parents, and colleagues
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of the Google Suite of apps (Drive, Calendar, Docs, Classroom, etc.)
  • Demonstrated knowledge and a willingness to participate in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging workshops and discussions to maintain alignment with the school’s Equity and Inclusion Statement
  • For all St. Bernard’s positions, the ability to play the piano is always considered a plus (music is a part of everyone’s day).

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $80k -$130k. St. Bernards School considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
