Best Handwriting Awards
by Ginny Moore
On Friday, January 11, 2013 twenty boys were awarded for their fine handwriting. At St. Bernard’s handwriting plays an important role in how one presents one’s work and oneself. The Best Handwriting Awards have been a tradition since 1956.
Head of the Junior School, Jean Leness, has recounted the history of the award from her memory for us. In the 1970s each student copied a poem in his best handwriting as his entry. The task was a big deal to the boys, and they cared deeply about the competition and gave their best diligent efforts. Miss Rosemary Lea judged the winner in each homeroom class. In the early 1980s homeroom teachers became the judges, and they judged their boys’ work and compositions throughout over the entire first-term. In the mid-1980s St. Bernard’s switched to D'Nealian as the official style of handwriting.
Mrs. Leness says that Peter Niles from the class of 1993 is the only boy who won the award every single year while attending St. Bernard’s.
Nowadays winners continue to be selected by teachers, with one winner per homeroom class. In the spring twenty boys will be awarded the Most Improved Handwriting Awards.
