May is Jewish American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the rich history and culture of the Jewish people. At St. Bernard's, we were thrilled to honor this tradition with the first-ever Challah Twist Breakfast.
On the morning of May 16, 2024, the dining room was buzzing with excitement as parents, guardians, students, and siblings rolled up their sleeves to participate. Organized by the dedicated St. Bernard's Parents Association Community Gathering Committee, this special event brought our community together.
Jane G.'s warm welcome set the tone for a morning of learning, laughter, and togetherness. The challah twist, a cherished Jewish tradition with centuries of history, carries deep symbolism. The three strands of the braid are often interpreted to represent truth, peace, and justice. Alternatively, the two loaves with three strands each yield a total of six strands, symbolizing the six workdays of the week, with Shabbat as the day of rest.
The students and their parents arrived early, eager to learn the art of challah baking. As they gathered around the tables, there was a sense of anticipation and friendly competition. With pre-made dough, the boys focused on the intricate process of braiding and twisting, ensuring their challahs were light and fluffy. The addition of chocolate chips was a delightful surprise, adding a modern twist to this ancient tradition. As the event concluded, the boys were eager to take their challahs home and bake them to perfection. It was a beautiful way to connect with Jewish heritage and share it with others.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Parents Association, the Community Gathering Committee, and Jane G. for planning this wonderful celebration. St. Bernard's started the morning with a sweet tradition and ended with a stronger sense of community.
