Grade IV’s Illuminated Letters

by Perry Meigs, art teacher

For this project we looked at medieval illuminated letters and manuscripts.  The original idea to illuminate, to fill with light, came from the treatment of the first letter of a paragraph in a manuscript.  Historically the letter was decorated with animals, plants, or mythological creatures, and the surrounding area was filled with gold.  Artists in the fourth grade each chose a letter that had significance for him and then illustrated it in this traditional style.
