Advisory Program
A full-time clinical psychologist and a school counselor work with students and parents to support boys’ emotional and social well-being. The department provides individual support to boys in Junior School and group instruction in character development and emotional well-being to Middle School boys. The department also consults with parents, leads discussions and workshops on boys’ development, and provides individual counseling, as well as classroom guidance.
Upper School boys meet weekly in groups of six or seven, with a trained faculty member, to discuss important topics not covered in academic classes. Subjects include masculinity, stress management, building healthy relationships, and the meaning of happiness and success. Each group stays together with its faculty advisor for two years, creating a strong bond among the boys and a willingness to be open and honest.

International Travel
The school believes that boys benefit greatly from traveling abroad. St. Bernard’s has organized trips for the past thirty years to different parts of the world. The ninth graders have traveled to France, Italy, Morocco, India, and Japan, and the eighth grade boys have traveled to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.
The students and the school have a personal connection to the town and the people of Azama, a remote section of Ecuador located high in the mountains. The boys are able to interact with members of the community, plant trees, or paint buildings there. Their work is valued, and the town of Azama has named a street after St. Bernard’s to show its appreciation. From invaluable trips the boys learn lessons about empathy, compassion, social awareness, and humility. These trips enhance the boys’ sense of independence and of maturity. They also expose them to cultures very different from their own.

Multicultural Fair
Included in the Friday assembly schedule is the multicultural fair, an annual school event at which the student body and faculty learn about and celebrate some of the different cultures of the world. Last year we celebrated India. The teachers incorporate the countries represented in the fair each year into curriculum that is taught before the fair. Countries are chosen to increase the awareness of the various cultures within the school community. The following countries have been represented in previous years:
