On October 30, St. Bernard’s welcomed bestselling children’s author Adam Gidwitz for an engaging and thought-provoking visit.
Mr. Gidwitz’s novel, The Inquisitor’s Tale, a Newbery Honor winner last year, has been a favorite among many of our Middle School boys. During his visit, however, the spotlight was on his New York Times bestseller, Max in the House of Spies, which served as the focus of his inspiring talk.
Max in the House of Spies is the story of a young boy who must move to London on his own to escape Nazi Germany. Many of our students have read the book but were surprised to learn that the story was inspired by Mr. Gidwitz’s family friend who also was sent to England via the Kindertransport.
In two separate assemblies—one for the Middle School and one for the Upper School—Mr. Gidwitz shared insights into the highs and lows of the writing process, emphasizing the importance of perseverance. His visit left the boys motivated not only to read more but also to explore their own creative potential as storytellers.
Many thanks to our librarian, Mrs. Reid, for arranging the morning. This visit was made possible by the Kronengold Authors Fund established by a group of Old Boys in honor of their second-grade teacher Susan Kronengold.
