Fifth graders take a full-year course, designed by our teachers and counselors, to learn about equity and justice. Boys use literature, film, and first-person narratives to gain an age-appropriate understanding of personal identity, the Holocaust, the Civil Rights movement, and the work that remains to be done today. Resources from Teaching Tolerance, in addition to such films as “Time for Justice” and books such as “The Watsons Go to Birmingham,” spark difficult but necessary conversations and push boys to think about history, their own communities, and themselves in new ways.
